Rockwood Trail Riders was founded in 1963 by two childhood friends who found themselves raising families and horses in the small Ontario town of Rockwood. Very few of the local horse people had trailers, so they focused on local trail rides and other family-oriented fun events they could enjoy with and without their horses. A couple years later, they began to hold horse shows, and gymkhanas, moving from farm to farm. In 1967, the club having grown, the Dales family donated the space for a permanent arena, just at the north end of Rockwood. In 1968, the first full slate of shows was held at the new arena. This is where they are still held. RTR is one of the founding clubs of Ontario Competitive Trail Ride Association (Long distance competitive, endurance and Ride’n’Tie) and the Ontario Trail Ride Association dedicated to pleasure trail riding and the preservation and development of horse trails in Ontario.

Horse shows are held the second Sunday of May, June, July and August, with the Trail Horse Trials and Poker Run in September.  At the shows, we host both English and Western events, flat & hunter classes, pleasure, horsemanship, showmanship and games.  Many accomplished international riders, coaches and judges have started their show experience at Rockwood. Our newsletter “Hoof Prints” is published six times a year.

To celebrate our 50th Anniversary season, both current and former members contributed memories, observations, pictures and Hoof Print articles that have been assembled into the paperback book “Horse Tails”
Copies are for sale through the executive and available at the show.
